Essay Plan Tutorial

Essay Plan Tutorial

Introduction – discussed separately. Aim for 250 words.

Section 1 – historical text. I agree that starting with the history makes sense but it’s not clear what your historical text is. Perhaps go back to 80s/90s political hip hop? You can get some textual analysis in there if so. 400 words.

Section 2 – Primary text: TI - Warzone. Textual analysis. Media key concepts etc. Quotes/reviews etc. 500 words.

Section 3 – Secondary texts. Try and use texts that also contain strong political messages or comments on race. Get textual analysis in here too. 400 words.

Section 4 – You need to re-work your plan for research and theory. Rather than researching incidents, you need media theory. Look up Alvarado, Franz Fanon, Gilroy, Hall on representation of race etc. Explore protest hip hop in the context of media that offers very narrow representations of black people (particularly young black men). 600+ words.

Section 5 – can new technology change representations of race? Black Lives Matter campaign, citizen journalism etc. Self-representation? Do black artists inadvertently reinforce negative stereotypes? 400 words.

Section 6 – How this debate may look in future. Context of Trump etc. 300 words.
Conclusion – sum up your argument, snappy ending please! 150 words.

Next steps…
·         Update/finish your plan based on this tutorial. You don’t need to stick to the above by any means but hopefully it has at least clarified your thinking and provided a potential structure that will be easy to follow.
·         Write your opening paragraph and email it to me (this will be today’s task) so I can give you some feedback before you start the rest of the draft.
·         This essay has great potential – the key is making sure it is definitely a media essay and doesn’t drift into Sociology etc. The new technology/black lives matter side is also a great opportunity to discuss contemporary media issues.
Publish this tutorial to your blog as a new blogpost called ‘Essay plan tutorial’ and write your next three steps in the project.
