MEST4 Linked production: Research and planning

MEST4 Linked production: Research and planning

1) Confirm your production brief. You write this yourself but it's absolutely crucial this is clear, appropriate and achievable. You should have done this already - the original blogpost was here - but it may have changed as a result of your preliminary exercise.

My linked production is going to be a music video for a song that I have recorded myself.

2) Research: detailed notes on at least THREE texts similar to what you are creating. What are the key conventions? What can you learn/borrow from the examples you have looked at?

3) Project schedule: when will you shoot and edit this production? Make this a week-by-week schedule leading up to Easter. Key dates: we break up for Easter on Friday 31 March and the final deadline is Wednesday 19 April.

March 17th - Shoot in Canary Wharf.
March 28th & March 30th - Shoot inside of school. in front of black screen and green screen.
March 31st - Shoot in Rectory Park.
During Easter Period - Edit video.

4) Script - see the BBC Writers' Room for advice/script formatting. If you're making a music video, you'll want to write a treatment instead. This is an example treatment that I provide for GCSE Media students studying this topic.A video treatment, also known as video concept, outlines information with regards to what the music video will be about. The treatment goes down to describe the kind of locations, situations, stories, images, look and feel, tone and colour, pacing and so on of the music video.

Video treatment:

My music video will be about a girl (myself) who feels like she does not have to conform into people's expectations and trends. She firstly sets out to meet friends wearing the same outfit and conforming to what they are doing but after she realises that everyone deserves to be different and leaves the situation. She changes her clothes into more bright clothing and acts different to what everyone is doing. She then feels content with herself and happy that she has come away from feeling withheld.

My video concept will follow three different locations with one of these locations containing a narrative. The first location will consist of the artist (me) sitting in front of a tropical screen and performing the song, the second location will consist of me performing (dancing and using a lot of expressive body language) in front of a black screen and also a green screen in order to edit in a tropical background. The third location will be set with me waking up out of bed and going outside and then going to the park to meet some friends. Each location will alternate with eachother.

The tropical scenes will represent that she is at peace with herself and her life is more colourful, this will be the start of the music video and will zoom into her point of view where the black scenes and part scenes will be narrated. After this, there will be a reverse of everything that has been recorded and the camera will zoom out of her eyes and she will be content.

A lot of the park scenes will be filmed in slow motion and the rest of the scenes will be filmed at normal pace.

Tropical scenes will be high-key lighting.
The black screens will be more low-key lighting.
The park scenes will have normal lighting (high-key).

5) Sketching and drafting - for video-based productions this means astoryboard - sheets available in DF07 or you can print out your own AQA storyboard sheet. For print productions, this means detailed sketches of all your pages.

6) Shot list - use Microsoft Word or a template like this to help you. Remember, you need a shot list whether you are filming or carrying out a print photoshoot - professional quality original images are essential if you want to reach the top level.

7) Mise-en-scene: casting/model details, costume and make-up, props, lighting, location scouting for video productions etc. Use photographs to document and plan your mise-en-scene - using your phone is acceptable for this.
