Critical Investigation: Task #6

Critical Investigation: Task #6

Write the introduction to your Critical Investigation essay.
This should clearly introduce your primary text, the media issue or debate you are addressing and what angle your essay will use to approach the question. It needs to engage the reader, pose some questions and give a clear indication of what direction the essay will take. The word count will vary but you want to aim for around 200-250 words.

To what extent do political hip hop music videos such as T.I - Warzone initiate the media debate of police brutality and has this helped to transform the social issue?

Without a doubt, music has been a form of expression to speak for what could not be said. Social inadequacies against inferior citizens have been utilised in music to target prejudice, injustices and lack of authority. Political Hip Hop, as an outcome, has specifically challenged police brutality within its culture as artists have attempted to make some form of change through their soundtracks and music videos; notably, T.I - Warzone (2016). T.I introduces a new approach to his music video by rejecting the nature of police brutality and presenting the deaths of Tamir Rice, Eric Garner and Philando Castile by accommodating race reversal in order to provoke a new perspective on the issue. But to what extent does political hip hop assist social change? There has been innumerable forms of music that has taken a stance against such discrimination and although there appears to be more justice available, the extent of change as a result of music is questionable. This essay will provide a number of aspects and angles to prove how political hip hop music videos has initiated the media debate of police brutality and if it has helped to transform the social issue.
