Introduction to the Critical Investigation: Issues and Debates

1) Write a one-sentence answer to the initial questions in the factsheet:
  • Do fashion magazines contribute to the occurrence of eating disorders?
In my opinion fashion magazines do contribute to the occurrence of eating disorders due to there being a continuous representation of women that are slim or men that are in muscular. However, there is starting to be a rise on women that are more curvy or "plus sized".
  • Do games make people behave violently?
This depends on the individual. Some people are easily influenced by what they consume whilst others are not.
  • Does advertising work?
Advertising works to some extent. Some products that are advertised on television may be more effective that adverts on websites like YouTube. This is because advertising on YouTube can be skipped and viewers may wish to skip the advert as it is disrupting what they want to view.
  • Does social media generate misogyny?
Social media does generate misogyny due to there being a lot of opinions and representations of women. This is viewed widely which could influence people's views and conceptions.

2) Having read the two sides to the discussion, what is your opinion on the effects debate?

In my opinion, the effects debate is entirely dependent on the individual. Some people may consume violent sources of media but do not act upon it as they have different norms and values. Some people may act upon violent media due to their vulnerability to what they view.

3) Summarise the two sides of the example issues and debates on page 2 of the factsheet:
  • Twitter's influence on the news
Twitter's influence on the news may be misinterpreted by social media as they have a large audience however facts can be presented in a wrong way by opinion leaders.
  • New technology, privacy and Wikileaks
New technology, privacy and Wikileaks can be a breach of privacy as personal data can be exploited.
  • Social media and racism, sexism or threats online
Social media and racism, sexism or threats online can be explored as attackers can attack people however this can give people freedom of speech.

4) What is your opinion on the growth of transgender issues in media debates?

The growth of transgender issues in media debates is becoming bigger. This is through social media, television shows and celebrities.

5) Complete the MIGRAIN table below (also on page 4 of the factsheet) linking media products to issues and debates.
